Why clean and maintain your roof in Nouvelle-Aquitaine?
The roof is the single most important element in protecting your home and ensuring its longevity. In Nouvelle-Aquitaine, the climate — alternating summer heat with winter humidity — creates ideal conditions for micro-organisms to take hold quickly. Moss, lichen, algae and fungi gradually colonise your tiles.
These organisms don’t just spoil the look of the building: they act like sponges, holding onto rainwater. Constant dampness weakens the roofing material and encourages micro-cracks to form. During winter frosts, trapped water expands and can crack or chip the tiles (a process known as frost-shattering). Over time, this leads to water ingress, damages the roof timbers and degrades the insulation in your loft space. Regular, professional roof cleaning is therefore an essential maintenance task to protect the value of your property and avoid extremely costly full re-roofing work later on.
A gentle cleaning method suited to every roof type
Because every roof is different, we apply a strict principle of respecting the surface. We never use uncontrolled high-pressure cleaning (like a badly adjusted pressure washer), as this would strip the protective outer layer of the tiles and destroy the waterproof joints, leaving your roof even more vulnerable to future damage.
We adapt our techniques to the material and level of grime on your roof:
- Low-pressure steam cleaning (between 100°C and 150°C at 50 bars): This gentle method uses the heat of the steam to lift and remove moss, soot and lichen in depth, without any harsh chemicals. It’s ideal for terracotta tiles, slate and delicate metal roofs.
- Classic low-pressure cleaning: This allows us to apply a gentle, biodegradable cleaning agent that dissolves surface dirt before a controlled-flow rinse.
- Drone spraying: For very tall, steeply pitched or hard-to-reach roofs, we use our professional spraying drone. This technology allows us to apply cleaning products or anti-moss treatments directly from the air in complete safety, without any technician needing to walk on your tiles — avoiding any risk of mechanical damage.
The different roofing materials we treat
We work on all roof types found in our region:
- Terracotta tiles (Roman, flat, canal): The traditional material of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, very susceptible to porosity and black lichen growth.
- Concrete tiles: These tend to lose their original colour over time and often need a water-repellent treatment after cleaning to restore their waterproofing.
- Slate (natural or synthetic): A delicate material requiring very low pressure and temperature-controlled steam cleaning.
- Steel decking and corrugated sheet roofs: Commonly used on commercial and agricultural buildings, prone to pollution and dust build-up that needs removing to prevent corrosion.
A long-lasting curative treatment for a lasting result
To ensure our work stands the test of time, cleaning alone isn’t enough. Once the roof has been cleared of physical grime, we apply a biodegradable long-lasting curative anti-moss treatment. This treatment penetrates the pores of the roofing material to eliminate any remaining germs and microscopic spores.
We also offer a water-repellent treatment (clear or coloured). This creates a waterproof yet breathable barrier: rainwater slides off the tiles, carrying away surface dust as it goes (a self-cleaning effect), preventing moisture from lingering and considerably slowing the regrowth of lichen and moss for several years. Frequently Asked Questions
Can't find your answer? Call us, we'll advise you for free.
Does roof cleaning damage the tiles?
No, not when done with the right technique. We favour low pressure and steam so as not to damage the tiles or the joints.
Does the roof need treating after cleaning?
It's strongly recommended. A long-lasting curative anti-moss treatment slows the return of moss and lengthens the time between cleans.
Do you work on hard-to-reach roofs?
Yes. For tall or complex roofs, drone cleaning and inspection let us work safely, without scaffolding.
