Why clean and make your terraces and outdoor flooring safe?

Outdoor flooring (terraces, pathways, pool surrounds, driveways) is directly exposed to the weather, standing water and constant foot traffic. Over time, a biological film made up of micro-algae, moss and lichen builds up on the surface.

This green or greyish film isn’t just unsightly — it’s a genuine hazard. As soon as it rains or moisture sets in, this film becomes extremely slippery. It’s a leading cause of falls around swimming pools and on garden paths. What’s more, the roots of weeds and moss work their way into paving joints or concrete micro-cracks, causing them to crack and shift. Professional terrace cleaning restores the shine to your outdoor spaces and keeps users safe by making surfaces slip-resistant again.

A washing technique adjusted to the sensitivity of each material

There’s no one-size-fits-all treatment for outdoor flooring. Using uncontrolled high pressure on delicate materials like wood or reconstituted stone can cause irreversible damage (raised wood fibres, chipped stone aggregate). At Aquit’n Nettoyage, we choose our cleaning method based on the material:

  • Wooden decking (exotic woods such as ipe or teak, or pressure-treated softwood): We use low-pressure steam cleaning or gentle mechanical brushing. This removes surface greying and green algae without opening up the wood grain or tearing out fibres.
  • Natural stone and reconstituted stone paving: These surfaces are often porous. We use a rotary surface cleaner with regulated pressure (a “cleaning bell”) that spreads the water’s force evenly to lift out grime without marking the slabs or destroying sand or mortar joints.
  • Concrete (exposed-aggregate, smooth, brushed) and interlocking pavers: More resistant materials, but prone to embedded lichen. We apply controlled high pressure or steam cleaning to disinfect deep within the pores.
  • Outdoor tiles and porcelain stoneware: Often less porous, they mainly get dirty around the grout lines. We use a medium-pressure cleaning bell to restore cleanliness to both the tiles and the grout without lifting them.

Applying a long-lasting curative algicide treatment for a lasting result

To space out cleaning sessions, we apply a biodegradable finishing anti-moss and algicide treatment after washing. This treatment destroys microscopic spore residue left within the material and considerably slows the return of moss and lichen.

For natural stone and porous concrete, we can also apply a surface water- and oil-repellent treatment. This product protects your paving against water and grease ingress (barbecue stains, oil), making everyday upkeep as simple as a hose down.
