Why is gutter cleaning and maintenance so important?

Gutters and downpipes play a fundamental role in protecting your home. They channel rainwater running off the roof away from your house’s foundations. Yet this equipment is often overlooked until major problems arise.

Over the course of the seasons, and particularly in autumn, gutters build up a good deal of debris:

  • Dead leaves and twigs: Blown in by the wind and from nearby trees.
  • Moss and lichen: Washed off the roof and into the gutters.
  • Mud and dust: Which forms a heavy sediment at the bottom of the gutter. As this debris builds up, it eventually blocks the strainers (filter grilles) and clogs the downpipes. Water can no longer flow freely and starts to overflow.

The disastrous consequences of a blocked gutter

Repeated overflow from a gutter causes serious damage to the structure of the building:

  • Damp on facades: Water runs directly down the outside walls, causing black staining, moss and fungus to appear, and speeding up render loss.
  • Water ingress under the roof: Overflowing behind the gutter, water seeps under the edge tiles and rots the fascia boards as well as the roof timbers.
  • Damage to foundations: Water gushing down at the base of the walls soaks into the ground, which can saturate the soil and cause cracks in the foundations or rising damp inside your walls. Regular gutter cleaning (ideally once a year, at the end of autumn) is a simple preventive measure that saves you from extremely heavy masonry or roof-timber repairs down the line.

Our safe intervention method in Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Gutter cleaning is carried out at height and carries significant fall risks for unequipped homeowners. Aquit’n Nettoyage works to strict safety protocols:

  1. Manual clearing: We remove all solid debris built up in the gutters by hand or with suitable gutter scoops.
  2. Hydro-clearing and rinsing: We rinse the gutter with moderate-pressure water to flush out any remaining sludge and ensure elbows and downpipes are fully unblocked.
  3. Drone inspection: For complex, very high, or inaccessible gutters on commercial or agricultural buildings, we use our drone. Aerial inspection instantly spots blockages or faulty joints without needing a costly cherry picker or scaffolding. While we’re on site, we also carry out a visual check of the overall condition of your fixings and joints, to flag any issues (leaks, worn joints, incorrect slope).
